Go to services and check whether "Shell Hardware Detection" is running properly or not. To do the same, click on start button, type "Services.msc" in the search box and hit the enter button on your keyboard. When services windows appears, navigate to "Shell Hardware Detection" service and double click on it to open the same. Make sure that "Startup type" is set to "Automatic". If it is not set to Automatic then use the drop down to change it. If the dafault system is not working then hold down shift key when you insert devices into your computer. It will open autoplay regardless of the default settings. You can also open Autoplay from control Panel. There check whether the list next to device or media i.e "Ask me ever time" option is selected. To open autoplay, click on start button>>Control Panel>>Hardware and Sound>>Autoplay. If none of the above steps worked for you then run the "Fix it" tool. You can download it by visiting http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd_drive_problems

Activating Autoplay is fairly easy and involves simple steps as follows :

    Click Start--control panel--hardware and sound--Autoplay

Check the checkbox beside, USE AUTOPLAY FOR ALL MEDIA AND DEVICES,
    Click SAVE.

This will activate the function and will start reading disks once it is entered in the drive.
