Control Panel icons missing after upgrading to Windows XP

I have recently upgraded my PC from Windows 98 to Windows XP. Some of the icons in Control Panel are missing after the upgrade. How can I recover it?

You can recover the icons by making certain changes in Registry settings. For that, you should first click on the ‘Start’ button on your screen and then on ‘Run’ option. After that, you should type ‘Regedit’ on the text field given and press the ‘Enter’ key on your keyboard. You can then find ‘HKEY_CURRENT_USER’ folder on the left pane of the ‘Registry Editor’ window appear on your screen. You should then click on the folder to view the ‘Control Panel’ folder along with ‘+’ sign on the left side. You can find many folders after clicking on that sign. You should then delete ‘don't load’ folder from them and close the ‘Registry Editor’ window. Finally, you should go to Control Panel after clicking on ‘Start’ button and check whether the icons are present on it or not.

Certain Control Panel icons are missing after upgrading to Windows XP

If you upgrade an earlier version of Windows to XP, you may find that several icons are missing from Control Panel. This is caused by a bug in Windows XP where certain registry settings left over from previous versions are misinterpreted. Here's how to fix it:

    1. Run the Registry Editor (REGEDIT.EXE).
    2. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Control Panel.
    3. Delete the Don't load key entirely, and close the Registry Editor.
    4. The change should take effect immediately.
