Desktop icons not showing their specialized images on Windows 7

For the past few weeks, I can’t view the images of both program and shortcut icons on the desktop of my PC running on Windows 7. But the programs and shortcuts work properly on the system. How can I restore the images?

Try to rebuild the Icon Cache database and check whether it can resolve the issue. Quit all the folder windows and press the CTRL+SHIFT+ESC key on the keyboard. This will bring up ‘Task Manager’ window on the screen. You can also type taskmgr.exe in search field and click on the exe program for opening the window. Press the ‘Process’ tab afterwards and locate Explorer.exe process. Right click on that process and select ‘End Process’ from the pop-up menu. If you are asked for confirmation, hit the ‘End Process’ button. Then, get into the ‘File’ menu of task manager and choose ‘New Task (Run)’ option. Type CMD.EXE into the available field and hit the ‘OK’ button for opening the ‘Command Prompt’ window. Enter the following commands into that window afterwards and press ‘Enter’ key after each command.
    • CD /d %userprofile%\AppData\Local
    • DEL IconCache.db /a
    • EXIT
Click the ‘File’ option in Task Manager again and hit ‘New Task (Run)’ option. You need to type EXPLORER.EXE this time before pressing the ‘OK’ button.
