    Hello my dear friend,

You get this error because of the following reasons:

    • Installing updates by using Windows Updates
    • Installing updates by using Microsoft Updates
    • Installing updates for Microsoft Security Essentials
    • Starting Windows Firewall
YOu can resolve it by following steps:

    1. Click Start, type services.msc in theSearch box, and then press Enter.
    2. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password or click Continue.
    3. Locate Background Intelligent Transfer Service and check the Status.
    4. If the Status is Stopped, right-click Background Intelligent Transfer Services, and then click Start in the menu.
    5. Locate Windows Update and check the Status.
    6. If the Status is Stopped, right-click Windows Update, and then click Start in the menu.
    7. Locate Workstation and check the Status.
    8. If the Status is Stopped, right-click Workstation, and then click Start in the menu.
    9. Close Services.

    ALL THE BEST.

Check you have these services and correct set:

    Windows Update -start AUTO
Background Inteligent Transfer Service -start DELAYED-AUTO
    Cryptographic Service -start AUTO
Windows Modules Installer - start MANUAL

    EDIT

I suspect you don't have Windows Module Installer -if yes you have to extract form your Vista DVD file TrustedInstaller.exe, place this file in C:\Windows\Servicing ,import special fix to registry from SYSTEM account attached in this thread & details here how to do that:
    Windows Modules Installer missing...
+restart next navigate to service Windows Module Installer (now this service should available) and run it manually

    dear friend,

When windows upgrade is failed due to some reasons then an user can see this problem.

There are two ways by which you can solve this problem.

    1. Reset the Windows update component & to try update again-

    Click on the Start button.
Type Run in the search box & click on the option appeared.
    It'll open the Run window.
You may also open it by pressing Windows key+R button together.
Type cmd in the edit field & press enter.
    Command prompt will open.
Now you have to do the following by entering proper commands-

Turn OFF Automatic update & the background intelligent transfer services.
Change the name of Catroot2 & Software distribution folder.
Register the files used by Microsoft & windows update to the directory.
Again turn ON the Automatic update & the background intelligent transfer services.

Check the attachment & type all the commands one by one in the command prompt followed by the consecutive enter.

After doing that, close the command prompt.
Restart your computer & try to update.

    2. If this doesn't help you, then you have to go for system restore.

    Click on the Start button.
Type system restore in the search box & press enter.
    Type administrator password if prompted.
Set a restore point & click on OK.
After termination of the process restart your computer & try to update your windows.
