Getting “rpc server unavailable” error while renewing IP address on Windows XP

Whenever I use IPCONFIG command to renew the IP address used in my laptop running on Windows XP, I am getting the error message “rpc server unavailable”. There is no difference in the situation even after re-connecting the network. How can I get rid of this error?

Press the ‘Start’ button reside at the bottom part of the desktop and wait until you can view the start menu. Navigate through that menu and click the ‘Control Panel’ option from it. Click on ‘Administrative Tools’ option visible on the ‘Control Panel’ window afterwards and locate the ‘Services’ option. By clicking on that option, you can view a list of services on the screen. Find out ‘RPC Endpoint Mapper’ service from that list and check whether the StartUp type is set to Automatic. If not, right click on the service and choose ‘Properties’ from the pop-up menu. Then, press the ‘General’ tab and locate the ‘StartUp type’ label. Click the arrow on the drop down button visible under this label and select the ‘Automatic’ option. Press on either ‘Apply’ or ‘OK’ option and restart the PC to save the changes.

    Hi.
    Check the status of Services.
    >>Click on the Start button
    >>select Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Services.
    >>Locate RPC Endpoint Mapper in the list and check that the StartUp type is Automatic.
    >>If it is not set to Automatic right click and select Properties, General tab.
    >>There is a box after StartUp type.
    >>The options are available on a drop down by clicking on the arrow down to the right of the box.
    >>Make the change and click on Apply and OK. Restart the computer and check whether it has started.

    Thank you.

This problem occurs because of a mismatch in the computer name and the name that the RPC service expects. This mismatch may occur if the computer name is changed by using one of the following methods:
    • The Microsoft System Preparation (Sysprep) tool was used to create the Windows XP image that you used to start the computer.
    • You change the computer name during the Windows XP Out of Box Experience.
    • One or more of the following conditions are true:
      • You disconnect the network cable during the Windows XP Out of Box Experience.
      • You do not restart the computer after the Windows XP Out of Box Experience has completed.
      • You open Disk Management.
Right click My Computer->Manage and go to the services section. You start/stop services from here. You can also right click and select Properties.... and see the Dependencies of the service.
