How to delete a file in my Windows PC when it says its used by another service or program? Is it possible to force delete those files as of Linux where we use rm command?

I wanted to delete all the unwanted files of a software from my Windows system but when I do it I get an error saying that its been used by another program or so when nothing is opened, so how to delete some files when I get this error? What steps should I take? Is there any command available in Windows as like Linux have rm command?

:::::My dear friend this message can occur due to the following reasons:::::
    Files are locked
They used by a background program

    :::::Solutions to this problem:::::
Locate the program using the file and close it.In case you dont know about the program then close all the programs.
Try using unlocker, a free software program designed to unlock any file being used by Windows or any other program.
If after closing all programs you're still unable to delete the file,
then it means some hidden background program is still using it.
Try rebooting your computer and then delete the file.
If rebooting does not help then open the computer in the safe mode and then delete the file.

    My dear friend,
First if you wanted to delete unwanted files you should remove them properly by using
control panel->add or remove programs->then select the program and uninstall it.this is the proper way of doing it.

The command you are looking for is del command.
but you can use this command only when you have administrator privileges otherwise it won't be executed.
syntax of the command is similar to rm in linux.

    ### Hi dude ###

    Do the following steps--->

    • It seems that the files you gonna delete is in use.
    • Un-install the software that you want to delete and then do it.
    • For Example,if you want to delete a song but at the same time you are hearing that song then it will show this msg "Used by another program".
    • So you need to un-install first then you try it.

    Hope it helps.

    ### Thank you ###

Cool Re: How to delete a file in my Windows PC when it says its used by another service or program? Is it possible to force delete those files as of Linux where we use rm command?

This happens many time because of the effect of virus or system setting problems.
If it is system setting problem it can be easily rectified by methods suggested by other members.
If it is virus attack then it is a big headache.
The files which are hidden can easily be accessed by using:
    winrar

just navigate to the location where u have placed the hidden file.
U have my word that 100% that file will by visible by winrar and u can run or open it by double clicking it

    try and reply me

    with regards

To solve your problem you can follow these simple steps:-

-First download the UNLOCKER software from the internet.
    -now install the unlocker.
    -restart your pc.
-now when any file shows"unable to delete/used by another program", then right click on the file and unlock with the help of unlocker.

    Dear friend,

If the file you want to delete is used by another program then you cannot delete it in Windows.
To delete this type of files, you can use the tool:

    Remove-on-Reboot-Shell-Extension

To use this tool, right click on the file you want to delete and then select the Remove on Next Reboot option from drop-down menu list.

And the file will be deleted during the next boot up.

    Thanks!

    Dear Guest,
The file you are going to delete are already in use so you need to stop their process firsty open the windows task manager and in process right click on the program and click on end process and delete it . OR it might had also happened it need the permission from administrator to do so you need to open as administrator delete them and one simpler way to delete them is to uninstall them from programs and features in control panel .
I hope these will help you thankyou.
