How to rename a set of files with unique names in Windows?

I want to rename a set of files in my Windows PC with unique names which in sense if I select a set of files and select Rename and give the name, it changes into name(1),(2).. and so on but I don’t want to be like that, I want that file names to be the same which is before appended with some string or so. How to do this? Is it possible to it in Windows?

Yes, off course its possible in Windows to rename the set of files as you desire but with the help of a good 3rd party application called as D-FileMU it as a really great feature in working with files like Adding strings to the beginning, deleting specified number of characters from the beginning or the end, change the file name to upper or lower case, replace strings with specified string and so on.

You can download the D-FileMU software from internet for free CLICK HERE!!

After the download is done which will be very soon as it is just some 120-130kb setup, you can install it in your system and follow the detailed steps given to carry out the renaming of files successfully.[FONT=Arial]

    Hello,
Now you have quite an interesting question. I have wanted this too in my PC.What I did for my files was that, I designed a C program for this purpose. You could design a C program and compile it to get the final output for execution on renaming several files.
Else there could be another process. Here you would have download a separate software for this purpose. There are several websites for free software download, like that of Torrentz. You can search for Rapid Streams name dropper. here what you have to do is, you have to drag the name that you want to apply each time to a new file. So you can quite well understand that a simultaneous operation for all files is not possible in this case. This will work for one file at a time. You have to place your files(that are required for renaming purpose) in this software and then type the file name format that you want for the first and the subsequent files in the topmost text box of this software. Now try the one that you prefer.

    Dear,

There is a simple built-in method in Windows. First you just need to select all your files you wish to rename. You can go to Edit > Select all or press Ctrl + A.

Now you can right-click and choose Rename or you can press F2, which is the windows shortcut. Now you just need to rename the first file to whatever you wish. Once you rename the first file you can press enter, this will rename all the files you have selected to this name with a unique number appended to the end.

Re: How to rename a set of files with unique names in Windows?

you can do this with windows explorer.........just follow my steps

1.start windows explorer.to do so,click start, point to all programs, point to accessories, and then click windows explorer.......

2.select multiple files in a folder.to do so,press and hold down the ctrl key while you are clicking files..........

    3.after you select the files,press f2.......

4.type the new name and press enter........

note:when you complete the precedind steps, the highlighted state of all files except one disappears,so its may appear,as if you are only renaming one file...........
how ever you press ENTER,all of the files are renamed.when you rename multiple files......all of the renamed files have the same name to make the new file name unique. For example, if you type BUDGET as the new name, the first file is named BUDGET. All of the remaining selected files are named BUDGET(x), where x is a unique number, starting with (1).

    Notes

If you make a mistake when you try to rename multiple files, you can press CTRL+Z, or click Undo Rename on the Editmenu to undo file rename action you just completed, and you can repeat this process as needed.

The Rename function in Windows Explorer does not match the behavior of the REN command you may use at a command prompt. For example, if you had files that are named smitha.doc, smithb.doc, and smithc.doc, you could use the ren smith*.doc smythe*.doc command. All file names automatically show the new spelling, and are renamed smythea.doc, smytheb.doc, and smythec.doc.

If you use the Windows XP Rename function in Windows Explorer, after you select the three "smith" files, and rename smitha.doc to smythea.doc, all the other files you selected are named smythea(x).doc. To return to the original file name structure (the use of a, b, c, etc), you must rename each file individually.

    Hello Friend,

There is a simple built-in method in Windows. First you just need to select all your files you wish to rename. You can go to Edit > Select all or press Ctrl + A.

Now you can right-click and choose Rename or you can press F2, which is the windows shortcut. Now you just need to rename the first file to whatever you wish. Once you rename the first file you can press enter, this will rename all the files you have selected to this name with a unique number appended to the end.

Personally, I find this method a bit lacking and prefer to use a program with advanced features. I recommend A.F.5 which is a free file renaming program. There are many more options to choose from with A.F.5 than with the method built-into Windows.

A.F.5 makes it easy to rename many files at the same time. Drag and drop your files from Microsoft® Windows® Explorer to the window of A.F.5, build new filenames and click Rename.

In order to rename a set of files with unique names in windows, just follow these steps:

    1. Click Start and point to all programs.

    2. Point to accessories and then click windows explorer.

    3. Select multiple files in a folder.

    4. After you select the files, Press F2

    5. Type the new name and press enter.

Wish you all the very best...........
