How to run CHKDISK Utility on Windows XP?

I have installed Windows Xp on my PC. Previously I have installed Windows Vista. The Vista took more space to place it since I have only 80 GB of Hard drive so I was unable to install any softwares on C drive due to low space. This made me to switch with Windows XP. Recently I got an error message which says that WINDOWS - corrupt file The file or directory c:\documents and settings\allusers\application data\norton\-}oc55co96-of1d-4f28-aaa2-85ef5911267e7}n360_5.1.0.29\definitions\bashdefs is corrupted and unreadable. Please run the CHKDISK utility. I do not have any awareness over this utility. Is there any need to buy such kind of disk. If so then tell me where I should buy. Please help me out.

The process of running CHKDISK utility is very simple. You no need to follow any steps on it and also no need to action at the end of checking. This utility itself will clear all kinds of errors that are in the system. There is no need to buy this utility. You will have this by default in all Windows operating system. Follow these steps for Windows XP operating system: Go to Start and click on it and then select Run or you can also press Windows key + R. Now the Run command window will appears. Type chkdsk and press Enter. This will bring you command prompt window where chkdsk.exe file will be compiled. This will take few minutes to complete. You can see the status of it by seeing the percent completed that is shown on the screen. Once the chkdsk utility has been compiled, then the error will be cleared.

    Hi,
CHKDSK or checkdisk as commonly pronounced is what the name suggests. It checks the health , integrity of the disks attached to the system.

All disks are formatted to create tracks and sectors for data keeping , processing , storing and act as address where it can be stored and can be recalled with that address reference.CHKDSK checks for bad tracks and sectors if and when generated and corrects them to its limit. It also checks files integrity etc.

To run CHKDSK go to START > ALL PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES > COMMAND PROMPT > write chkdsk and press enter.
It is a built in program for DOS and WINDOWS and free of cost.
    Thank you.

Re: How to run CHKDISK Utility on Windows XP?

Chkdsk (Chkdsk.exe) is a command-line tool that checks volumes on your hard disk drive for problems. The tool then tries to repair any problems that it finds. For example, Chkdsk can repair problems related to bad sectors, lost clusters, cross-linked files, and directory errors. To use Chkdsk, you must log on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.

    • Chkdsk requires exclusive access to a volume when it runs. Therefore, if one or more of the files are open on the disk that you want to check, Chkdsk prompts you to schedule the disk check for the next time that you restart your computer.
    • Chkdsk might take a long time to run, depending on the number of files and folders, the size of the volume, disk performance, and available system resources, such as processor and memory.
    • Chkdsk might not accurately report information in read-only mode.
    PROCEDURE TO RUN CHKDSK
    1. Click Start, and then click Run.
    2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then press ENTER.
    3. Use one of the following procedures:
      • To run Chkdsk in read-only mode, at the command prompt, type chkdsk, and then press ENTER.
      • To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, at the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/f, and then press ENTER.
