Left mouse click only opening desktop shortcuts on Windows Vista

Left mouse click can open only desktop shortcuts in my laptop running on Windows Vista. It won’t work with the items in taskbar or quick launch. What should I do to fix up this issue?

Disable the mouse keys after getting into Ease of Access Center and see whether it resolves the issue. Click the ‘Start’ button first and choose ‘Control Panel’ from the start menu pop up on the screen. Once you can view the ‘Control Panel’ window, click the ‘Ease of Access’ option. The next step required is to click the ‘Ease of Access Center’ and ‘Make the mouse easier to use’ option one after the other. Clear off the check box next to the option which can turn on Mouse keys. After that, you need to uncheck the option visible under ‘Make it easier to manage Windows’ label. Click on both ‘Apply’ and ‘OK’ buttons afterward and then see whether the mouse functions normally.
