Messages disappearing from Outlook Express on Windows XP after clicking the ‘Compact messages’ option

While I was navigating through Outlook Express on my PC running on Window XP, I have accidentally clicked the ‘Compact messages’ option. This erased the six month old messages from Outlook Express. What are the procedures required to restore them?

Once you make certain that Outlook Express is not running, click the ‘Recycle Bin’ icon available on desktop. Find out the .bak file of Outlook Express folder you want to restore. You can easily recognize the file as it is named like the folder inside Outlook Express. Right click on that file once you locate it and select ‘Restore’ from the pop-up menu. Launch the Windows Explorer and search for the restored file and open the folder of that file. After that, drag and drop the .dbx file of Outlook Express folder you want to restore to desktop. Right click on the .bak file inside Outlook Express store folder and choose the ‘Rename’ option. Replace the .bak extension with .dbx. Get into Outlook Express afterwards and check whether the mails get recovered. If so, delete the .dbx file on desktop after right clicking on it.
