Not able to remove external hard drive safely from PC running on Windows Vista

I have connected an external hard drive to my PC running on Windows Vista and performed the necessary functions. But when I click on ‘Safely Remove Hardware’ option to remove the hardware, the system made me wait for 30 seconds and then showed a message “device could not be removed; please close all running programs and try again late”. Why is it so and how can I avoid this?

    hiiii....
This problem only occurs when any app or programs is running behind.
You need to close all the processes before you try to remove a USB.
If you can not see the processes running on desktop, then open the task manage(control+shift+esc)
Click on process button and check if unnecessary process are being running by the name your device.
Then end the process that might be running and also unnecessary.
Then refresh the computer. And wait 10-12 seconds.
Then try to remove the HDD.
Still not solved, reply back so i can have some other solution.

    Hi,

There is nothing to be worried about.

There must be other programs running at the background which is using the External Drive and if it was removed then the programs would have damaged themselves .

You should have clicked the Task Manager and stopped all running processes listed there and there would have no issues then but there would have no saving of the running program.

So , either give time to the System to run - execute - store the program/data, or force the system to halt everything and lost data. but be sure there is no physical damage to the HDD, and the system is also running fine,

    Thanks.
