Not able to view volume icon on notification area in Windows Vista

It seems that the volume icon has disappeared from my PC running on Windows Vista. Generally, I can view volume icon on the notification area located at the lower right hand corner of the screen. Since installing a java update, I am not able to find such an icon over there. What are the procedures required for restoring the icon?

Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc key on the keyboard for launching the Task Manager on your PC. Once you can view the ‘Task Manager’ dialog box, click the ‘Processes’ tab on the top part. Select ‘explorer.exe’ from the list pop up on the screen afterwards and press the ‘End Process’ button. The next step required to press the ‘User’ tab available on the screen for viewing another list. Choose ‘yourself’ from the available options. Then, click the ‘Log off’ tab reside at the bottom part of the screen. After that, login to your system again and see whether you can find the volume icon.

    Run “regedit” (Registry Editor)
    2.Find “iconstreams”
3.Delete all registry keys with names “IconStreams” and “PastIconStreams” until “iconstreams” can no longer be found in the registry
    4.Restart Windows Vista
5.Enable the missing icon using the usual method

When the computer restarts, the icons may still be missing, however you should now be able to enable them by right clicking on the taskbar, clicking on Properties and then enable them from the Notification Area tab. If you have multiple user accounts on your computer you may need to enable icons in the other accounts as well.

Add the Volume icon To Task Bar

To add the Volume icon to the notification area of your computer, follow these steps:

    1. Click Start
    2. Then click Run.

    3. Copy and paste or type the command :- mmsys.cpl in the Open box
    4. Then click OK:
    5. Click to select the Place volume icon in the taskbar check box.
    6. Click OK.
    7. If the Volume icon is displayed in the notification area of your computer, you are finished. If you cannot add the Volume icon or if you receive an error message when you try to add it, the Sndvol32.exe file might be damaged or missing
