Re: Is it possible to change the sound associated with a program in Windows XP?

    Hi,
Well, there are two different ways how you address your problem. One is that you click on the volume icon that you have on your task bar. This icon looks like a loud speaker. When you double click this icon then you get the dialog box where you can adjust volume levels for the external devices, microphones, headsets etc. The dialog box is called volume control. Also if you want further control there then click on the Options and then go to either properties or advanced for further options of controlling the sound levels. This same option you will get under the Accessories option of the Start Button.

Now your next option could be deal with this at a higher and intricate level. This could be done by going to the control panel. You can go to this option from the Start Button itself. Now in the window that opens subsequently you will see the option of Sounds and Audio devices with the same picture of a loudspeaker in it. When you double click and go there you will a great range of options and properties for volume and audio hardware etc. So you can operate the audio devices at detailed level. But this must be done very carefully and only if you know how exactly to deal with it.

Re: Is it possible to change the sound associated with a program in Windows XP?

click "start" -> "control panel" -> "Sound"-> select "sounds" from menu bar
    screen looks like:-
    1.jpg
The first drop down box is for any Sound schemes you may have on your computer. Yours will probably say Windows Default.

The Program Events list is all the XP events for which you can change the sound. Scroll down the list to see what's on it.

To assign your own sound to a Program Event, your need a new sound of format .wav.
And save it in "c:\windows\media" folder where windows store all of its own sounds.

If you copy your new sounds to the Media Folder they will be available in the Sounds drop down list. In the image below, we've selected the "Program Error" event. The Sounds list then becomes available:
    2.jpg
Select the sound you want from the list. If the sound you want is not on the list, click the Browse button. You can then search your hard drive for the location of your WAV file.
    As shown below:-

    3.jpg

Click Apply and OK when you're happy with your new sound.

    Dear friend,

Yes it is possible to change the sound associated with a program, but the main point to remember is that the sounds that can be associated with a program can be of file extension .wav , you cannot set background sound of some mp3 tune or some other.

To set .wav file as your background music to a progra follow the steps below:

    1 Click on the Start>
    Control Panel
3 Look for the option Sounds, Speech and Audio devices, double click it
4 Click on Change the sound scheme
5 Now a window having title ‘Sounds, Speech and Audio devices Properties window will open in front of you
6 Click on Program Events list
7 Click Play button for listening to sound
8 For changing the sound, click on drop down box
9 Browse for the file from your PC, it will show only the files with extension .wav
10 Click on the option denoted as ‘Save As’
11 Then enter the name of the scheme in the ‘Save Scheme As’ dialog box, enter the name and click save
12 Click OK and its done
