yes i am afraid the rumour is indeed true...
windows 8 doesnt support dvd playing apparently because the codec for playing dvd is patented. so if you need to play dvd you will have to pay
the liscensing fee to play your dvd's i.e buy media centre.

Re: Is it really true that Windows 8 going to remove the support to play DVD movies?

Yes, Windows 8 will not support the Normal DVD Play option Media player. You need to get the third party software or the Windows media player with the feature of playing the DVD with extra cost. There are many changes windows 8 is going to bring compare to that of Windows 7, This is considered as one of the major Disadvantage by many Experts. But Microsoft claimed that they are doing everything they can to improve the performance and stability of the Windows OS.

It is just a rumour and not true. Windows 8 support all the previous video
supporting function including DVD video or movies. They are not going to
    remove anything like this.
One thing more Windows 8 added many new and extra video functionality
and high graphical support. It added high sterio and HD quality tools that
    will improve your video quality.

Apart from it you can also see movie from Pen drive and other device.
So be sure there is nothing like that. OK

    HI,
i think you must be knowing that codec for playing dvd is patented, and so windows 8 has not included it in it`s package,
so for playing DVD you will have to pay the licencing fee or buy the the right for using DVD codec and it is being considered a major drawback for windows 8
    :-(

    hello friend,

Yes the rumor is true to some extent , that Microsoft has plans to scrap native DVD playback from Windows 8.

By doing so they want to focus on improving video streaming abilities by making it easier to access services like Netflix, Hulu, and YouTube because of global
decline in physical media sales. Microsoft is investing in a future without discs, and is hoping to keep costs down by removing DVD licensing fees.

However, those interested in having access to their collection of DVDs do have options, as Microsoft plans to introduce a third party DVD software to fill the void.
but then again you cannot make any guesses till the official word is out, and everything will be clear with windows 8 commercial release.
