Go through the start menu pop up on your system and locate the item you want to rename. Place the cursor on that item until it is highlighted. The next step required is to right click on this item. The settings of this item will be displayed on the screen afterwards. Check that list and click the ‘Rename’ option. This will bring up the rename dialog box on the screen. Locate the New Name field from that box and type in the new name. After that, press the ‘OK’ button and see whether the name has changed or not.

Go to start > Run and type Regedit to open the registry editor. Look for this path:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Windows NT>CurrentVersion>Winlogon

In the right, find the "Shell" entry. Double click on it and replace explorer.exe with softpedia.exe (or whatever you renamed the edited file).

Close the registry editor and Log Off or Restart your computer. After Windows XP boots, the new start button will have the name you have chosen.
