RPC server not available while doing auto-synchronization on Windows XP

As a part of performing auto-synchronization on my PC running on Windows XP, I went into Windows XP > Control Panel > Date & Time > Internet Time > Auto Synchronize > Server: time.windows.com > Update Now. I get an error message at this point saying “An error occurred getting the status of the last synchronization. The RPC server is unavailable”. How can I resolve this issue?

Re: RPC server not available while doing auto-synchronization on Windows XP

As a first step, move the cursor to bottom left part of the desktop. You can find a ‘Start’ button over there. Press that button and wait until you can view a start menu on the screen. Locate the start search box afterwards and type CMD.EXE into it. Then, press the ‘Enter’ key so that you can see a command prompt on the screen. Type the following commands into the command prompt and hit the ‘Enter’ key after each command.
    • NET STOP W32TIME
    • W32TM /Register
    • NET START W32TIME
After that, quit the command prompt and check whether the error gets resolved or not.

    Start, run, CMD

net start (check the service again to be sure it is stopped)

    net start rpcss
    net start (check again)

if no joy, you need to use the XP CD to go to the Recovery Console.

    From the Recovery Console type:

    enable RpcSs SYSTEM_AUTO_START

    reboot the machine.
