Steps to rebuild icon cache on Windows Vista

Whenever I log into my PC running on Windows Vista, the icons are not displayed properly. It seems that I need to rebuild the icon cache on my system. What should I do for that?

First of all, make certain that the system files are not hidden. Press the ‘Start’ button for that and navigate into Control Panel->Folder Options from the start menu. Click on the ‘View’ tab afterwards and locate the ‘Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)’ option. Clear off the check box next to this option by clicking on it. After that, make a single click on the ‘OK’ button. Then, click on ‘Computer’ option in the start menu and type C:\Users\username\AppData\Local into the address bar of the window pop up on the screen. Type the name of current user in the place of ‘username’. Locate the IconCache.db file afterwards and right click on it. Select ‘Delete’ from the menu pop up on the screen and click the ‘Yes’ option in the confirmation message. Quit the window and delete all files inside the Recycle Bin. Restart your PC after that for rebuilding the icon cache.
