Trouble in opening Windows Defender on Windows Vista

I tried to open Windows Defender for scanning my Acer laptop running on Windows Vista by double clicking on the program yesterday. But, I got an error code which asked me to do the process manually. What should I do to get rid of this issue?

First of all, you need to make sure that the Windows Defender service is already running on your system. Log into your system with administrative account for that and select ‘Control Panel’ from start menu after pressing the ‘Start’ button. Click on ‘System and Maintenance’ and ‘Administrative Tools’ one after the other and double click on ‘Services’ option. Provide confirmation or type password while prompted and right click on Windows defender service. Click the ‘Properties’ option from the available menu afterwards and press the ‘General’ tab. Then, make certain that Automatic is already selected near Startup type. In case the service is not running, click the ‘Start’ button under ‘Service Status’ and press the ‘OK’ button. Type in the password or give confirmation according to the prompt message and make sure the service is already started and automatic is selected. Another method to turn on Windows Defender is to navigate into Start->All Programs->Windows Defender->Tools->Options and locate ‘Administrator Options’ option. Click the checkbox next to clear the Use Windows Defender checkbox and press the ‘Save’ button. Once you are prompted, provide the administrator password or confirmation accordingly.
