Unable to run any program in Windows except VLC player

My system runs in Windows XP Professional. Everything was working fine until recently when I noticed that all shortcuts have been converted to lnk files. I am unable to run any programs in my PC except VLC media player and Mozilla Firefox. I canít even execute an antivirus scan. Regedit and CMD arenít opening as well. Is there any way to solve this issue without reinstalling the OS?

In order to set the windows proper again, take the route of System Recovery, which will solve your problems.

To recover the system what you need to do first is taking the backup of the important data, programs and files.

Go to Start--All Programs--Accessories--System Tools--System Recovery, and follow the instructions to recovery to an earlier time when the system was free from problems.

This will revert the system to an error free situation for windows.

Though it is enough to solve the problem, but in case if it fails to solve the issue, think about clean install of windows.
