When I uninstalled Norton Antivirus from my PC running on Windows Vista, the Windows firewall get disabled automatically. I canít re-enable the firewall after that. What should I do to resolve this issue?

First of all, confirm that the Windows Firewall has already started on your system and it is set to ‘Automatic’. Press the ‘Start’ button for that and navigate into Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools from the start menu. Then, double click on the ‘Services’ icon visible on the current window. The User Account Control will ask for permission afterwards. Click the ‘Continue’ button on the prompt message and locate ‘Windows Firewall’ from the list of services pop up on the screen. Then, right click on that service and choose ‘Properties’ option from the available menu. After that, select ‘Automatic’ from the ‘Startup Type’ drop down menu visible on the screen and press the ‘Apply’ button. You also need to check whether the ‘Start’ button is already grayed out on ‘Properties’ window. If not, click on that button to start the service.

    Hi,

This is quite a handfull problem for you as the solution is not definitive but rather experimental.

    How you did uninstall Norton?
Did you use the normal Vista uninstall utility ?
That might be the reason you're experiencing problems.
Norton products are notorious for the difficulty of removal.
Try using the Norton Removal Tool that is available in Symantec website.

Solution for the problem might be to run a system restore to the point when there was no problem on the machine. And possibly while Norton was not installed.
The firewall should work properly after restoring the system.
Uninstall Zone Alarm or any other third party firewall if installed , which will not let Windows Firewall to be activated.

    Thanks.
