Unable to view window on HP Envy 17 laptop upgraded to Windows 8

It is not possible to view any window on the desktop of my HP Envy 17 laptop since I upgraded it to Windows 8. I keep getting the windows error “Program Compatibility Assistant - ATI catalyst control center” while starting up the system. Any solution to fix this problem?

To see the desktop icons, right click on an empty space in desktop and choose ‘Personalize’ option from the available menu. Then, go to the left hand side of the screen and click the ‘Change Desktop Icons’ option. Click on the checkbox next to the items you want to display on desktop and press the ‘Apply’ button. You can view the windows by either updating the graphics drivers or running the Windows update. In the first method, click the ‘Search’ option inside the start menu after clicking the start button and type devmgmt.msc into the search box. Hit the ‘Enter’ key afterwards and find out the graphic device from the search results. Then, right click on that device and select ‘Update’ option from pop-up menu. If you choose the second method, then type Control Panel into the search box and press the ‘Enter’ key. Click the ‘Windows update’ button after that and install all the updates by making use of the options reside at the left pane.
