GUI stands for Graphical user interface.

they are interfaces that provide graphical interactions to the user rather than text based interface(like command prompt).

the start menu and desktop are part of GUI.

the start of GUI was the invention of Precursors invented by the Stanford Research institute led by
    Douglas Engelbart

    hi!!!
GUI is an acronym for 'graphical user interface' which literally means that with this system we can interact with our computer via images ( for eg: icons, drop down menus etc) instead of just text. if you have heard of dos system it is text based right??? you give command in textual form and then processing takes place.
In 1973 Xerox PARC devloped the Alto personal compuert which used GUI but it was not used for commercial purposes
    .It was devloped by
Alan Kay, Larry Tesler, Dan Ingalls and a number of other researchers.
Later on much improvement was done by many companies like APPLE,MICROSOFT to give us the system w e do have, there is lot of literature on the same.if you want to have a look go to following links:

GUI Stands for Graphical User Interface. It is mainly defined as the User interacting with the Computer Visually using the items as Windows, Icons and Menus which are used by most of the Operating Systems.

    It has many Features:
    • User Friendly.
    • Easy to interact with the Computer.
    • Easy to Understand.
    • Easy to Use.
    • Easy to Implement.
    • Uses the Environment of WIMP (Windows, Icons, Menu, Pointer).

There was a Company by name "Xerox" in 1979. "Xerox Palo Alto Research Centre" invented GUI. But later developed by Apple.

But before Xerox, in 1962, GUI was developed by NASA.

    GUI --> Graphical user interface.

As the name suggests its a user interface, its the front of any application you see in windows are any other operating system. You never know whats happening with back end of some of the applications, we simply use the front end to provide necessary information's. that front end is technically termed as Graphical user interface.

GUIs was invented by researchers at the Stanford Research Institute,The research head was Douglas Engelbart and he led the entire team. They developed the use of text-based hyperlinks manipulated with a mouse for the On-Line System.

    Friend
In computing, there are two types of interfaces, one being the Graphics User Interface(GUI) that uses Graphics such as icons, menus and images to communicate with the computer which is much easier than the Command Line Interface which connects with texts alone like in the DOS.
GRAPHIC USER INTERFACE gives beauty to the display.
Graphic user interface is believed to be invented by Xerox Palo Alto REsearch COMPANY under Douglas Englebart who is famous for the invention of mouse in 1963.

    GUI is graphical user interface.
In olden days they used to have inputs given in forms of numbers and alphabets.
Or to select a folder they type in the keyboards when there is no mouse or any pointing devices.
With the invent of mouse came the GUI.
Like you select the folder in a simple mouse click.
    Drag and drop options.
Whatever you see is a image of the program which is a graphical representation.
Douglas Engelbart invented GUI in 1963.

    HELLO GUEST

    What is GUI:-
    GUI (Graphical User Interface)
, where the user clicks on a visual screen that has icons, windows and menus, by using a pointing device, such as a mouse.GUI is pronounced like "gooey".
GUI makes it easy for the user, therefore makes the OS user-friendly.

    When it was Invented:-
    It was invented in 1973,

    Who Invented GUI:-
It was invented by Apple Company and now it's a toss up between apple and windows on who has the most advanced.

    Pleasure to help you.

    Thanks

    GUI= graphical user interface

    1) GUI is a type of user interface that allows users to interact with electronic devices using images rather than text commands

    2) GUIs was invented by researchers at the Stanford Research Institute led byDouglas Engelbart

    3) A GUI represents the information and actions available to a user through graphical icons and visual indicators such as secondary notation, as opposed to text-based interfaces, typed command labels or text navigation

    4)
The term GUI is restricted to the scope of three-dimensional display screens with display resolutions able to describe generic information, in the tradition of the computer science research at the PARC (Palo Alto Research Center)..

Re: What is GUI and when it was invented? Who invented it?

    """DEAR""""

The first graphical user interface was developed at the Xerox PARC (Palo Alto Research Center) in the 1970s for the Xerox Alto computer. Steve Jobs visited there when the interface was under development and saw it as the future of computing, incorporating it into the Apple Lisas software platform which eventually led to the Macintosh.

At a time when Microsoft and their MS-DOS operating system were struggling for innovation, Apple approached them to develop software for the Macintosh. This gave Microsoft a market for some of their product, and also gained them invaluable experience with GUI-based operating systems. Before long, theyd developed their own called Microsoft Windows, which shared the same elements as the Macs operating system (windows, icons, menus, pointing device) but added a new one, the blue screen of death.
Sources: 20+ years of PC and Mac experience.
The Xerox team at Palo Alto were responsible for inventing just about everything thats wonderful about todays computing. They were the first to have wysiwyg screens (black on white); multiple windows; the icon-driven interface, and just about everything else.

I know, because I bought a Xerox wordprocessor in 1986 (having had a disaster with the first line of IBM Personal Computers). It was absolutely superb. It never went wrong; I told the salesman that if I had to learn anything about computers to work it he could take it back, and he was true to his word. It was totally intuitive, so if you wanted to do something that you hadnt done before you just followed the principles youd learned.

However - they couldnt stand up to IBM (and they really didnt know how to market it) and the story as I had it (close to the lions orifice) was that they sold the Windows technology to IBM and the drop-down icon technology to Apple, thereby starting a game of lets you and him fight.

They got seriously left behind when (i) they produced a version that would run on a Windows platform and it was riddled with mistakes - I bought my first laptop with GlobalView on it and it drove me bananas, and (ii) using facilities like e-mail became incredibly complex. But even now, stuck as we almost all are with Windows and Word, I feel as if Im trading down.

Theres a book about it which sanitises the story somewhat but I've recommended it. But there's much more waiting to be turned into a Harvard case study or similar.

    Hello Friend,

    GUI:

Here, GUI stands for Graphical User Interface. It provides direct and easy interaction with the user. User can easily intract with it by using buttons, lists, frames, forms etc. There's no need to type any command to perform any action. It's just easy to use this because there's no need to remember a list of commands to perform any task.

This feature of GUI makes it User-Friendly.

It was Invented in 1973 by the most famous company named Apple. But, now its a toss up between the Apple and Windows on Who has the most advanced technique of this.

    Thanks.............

    Hi........

In computing, a graphical user interface (GUI) is a type of user interface that allows users to interact with electronic devices using images rather than text commands.A program interface that takes advantage of the computer's graphics capabilities to make the program easier to use. Well-designed graphical user interfaces can free the user from learning complex command languages.

A precursor to GUIs was invented by researchers at the Stanford Research Institute, led by Douglas Engelbart. They developed the use of text-based hyperlinks manipulated with a mouse for the On-Line System. The concept of hyperlinks was further refined and extended to graphics by researchers at Xerox PARC, specifically Alan Kay, who went beyond text-based hyperlinks and used a GUI as the primary interface for the Xerox Alto computer. Most modern general-purpose GUIs are derived from this system.
Ivan Sutherland developed a pointer-based system called the Sketchpad in 1963. It used a light-pen to guide the creation and manipulation of objects in engineering drawings.

Re: What is GUI and when it was invented? Who invented it?

Graphical user interface (GUI) is a type of user interface that allows users to interact with electronic devices using images rather than text commands. GUIs can be used in computers, hand-held devices such as MP3 players, portable media players or gaming devices, household appliances, office and industry equipment. A GUI represents the information and actions available to a user through graphical icons and visual indicators such as secondary notation, as opposed to text-based interfaces, typed command labels or text navigation. The actions are usually performed through direct manipulation of the graphical elements

Graphical user interfaces, such as Microsoft Windows and the one used by the Apple Macintosh, feature the following basic components:
pointer : A symbol that appears on the display screen and that you move to selectobjects and commands. Usually, the pointer appears as a small angled arrow. Text -processing applications, however, use an I-beam pointer that is shaped like a capital I.
pointing device : A device, such as a mouse or trackball, that enables you to select objects on the display screen.
icons : Small pictures that represent commands, files, or windows. By moving the pointer to the icon and pressing a mouse button, you can execute a command or convert the icon into a window. You can also move the icons around the display screen as if they were real objects on your desk.
desktop : The area on the display screen where icons are grouped is often referred to as the desktop because the icons are intended to represent real objects on a real desktop.
windows: You can divide the screen into different areas. In each window, you can run a different program or display a different file. You can move windows around the display screen, and change their shape and size at will.
menus : Most graphical user interfaces let you execute commands by selecting a choice from a menu.
The first graphical user interface was designed by Xerox Corporation's Palo Alto Research Center in the 1970s, but it was not until the 1980s and the emergence of the Apple Macintosh that graphical user interfaces became popular. One reason for their slow acceptance was the fact that they require considerable CPU power and a high-quality monitor, which until recently were prohibitively expensive.
In addition to their visual components, graphical user interfaces also make it easier to move data from one application to another. A true GUI includes standard formats for representing text and graphics. Because the formats are well-defined, different programs that run under a common GUI can share data. This makes it possible, for example, to copy a graph created by aspreadsheet program into a document created by a word processor.
Many DOS programs include some features of GUIs, such as menus, but are not graphics based. Such interfaces are sometimes called graphicalcharacter-based user interfaces to distinguish them from true GUIs.

    Hi,

Graphical Users Interface was developedin the United States, in Stanford University, where Douglas Engelbart and his team developed the interface.

Earlier it was all text based interfaces, and the researchers developed a program which takes advantage of pictorial interpretation of any command or option.

As pictorial represenrtations are easier for the user to understand what he wants and where to seek answer. Thus it get instant positive response, and GUI is now the ruler of the digital world.

    Thanks
