Re: What is the meaning of .ndf,.ldf and .mdf files in windows?

These three files are related to SQL server .These files represents Primary,Log File and Secondary files respectively. These three files are used by the same single server.

    Primary Data Files(.mdf files)
Primary Data Files are those files which needs administrator permission to access the file.It basically contains the root files. These files are cumpulsory.

    Secondary Data Files(.ndf)
Secondary data files are optional which means user dependent. These files are used to store data.It is used in single window file system in case the primary database fails in terms of storage.

    Log Files(.ldf)
As per the name suggest Log Files stores information about insertion, deletion, updation etc

    HI,

The explanation to your answers are as follows -

1).NDF STANDS - Secondary Data files
Secondary data, is data collected by someone other than the user.Common sources of secondary data for social science include censuses, organisational records and data collected through qualitative methodologies or qualitative research.

    2).LDF Stands - Log files

A file that lists actions that have occurred.A log file is a recording of everything that goes in and out of a particular server. It is a concept much like the black box of an airplane that records everything going on with the plane in the event of a problem.

3).MDF Stands - Primary Data files

It means One filegroup can contains multiple data files,In this u can
    a)Backup and Restore single filegroup

b)Control object placement on the filegroup level.

    c)Make filegroup readonly.
