turn on your wi-fi hard ware switch usually Fn +f2 keys in dell.
Make sure that your wi-fi driver is installed in your computer.
Connect to a lan network and then go to the device manager and
click the network adapter and double click to get the properties.
Go to driver and click on update driver.

hello dear, sorry to hear about your problem. As you have mentioned that your friends laptop is connected to wifi but your's is not, so we have to first turn on the wireless adapter on your laptop. To do so follow the below steps..

1- First go to start menu and write " Network and sharing center" on the search box.
2- Then click on the network and sharing center icon to open it.now in the opened window , you will find " change adapter settings" on the top left cornor. Click on it to open it.
3-Now you will see a icon named "Wireless Network Connection" , right click on it and choose enable.
4-Also check your laptop for some keys to show or hide wireless networks, as some laptops have these types of button.
5-Now clcik on the network icon on the taskbar which will be near volume icon and choose your preferred wifi network.

    HI,
first of all you need to now that wi-fi connectivity depends on a number of factor such as the wi-fi device in your computer, the strength of the signal etc.
It may be possible that your wi-fi hardware is not much advanced in respect to yours friend, and when you compare that it on the basis of operating system
then certainly windows 7 is predecessor of windows vista and is more enriched in technology.so you may want to upgrade your windows to windows 7.
    :-)
