Windows 7 update get failed with an error message “service is not running”

While I was installing updates on my PC running on Windows 7, an error dialogue box appeared on it with a message popping up, “Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. You may need to restart your computer”. How can I avoid this error message and run the update successfully?

You should first check whether the Windows update service is started or not. If it is not set as started, then you should start the service. For that, you should first click on the ‘Start’ button on your desktop. Then, you should type services.msc on the search box and press on the enter key. You can then view ‘Windows Update Service’ from the given list of items. You should then check that the dependencies of this service are set as automatic. After that, you should set the startup type as ‘Automatic’ and click on the Start button given for starting the service. You should then click on ‘Apply’ and ‘OK’ options consecutively to reflect the changes. If you can still find the issue, then you should start the Windows troubleshooter and fix up the problems with update. For that, you should perform the following steps in a consecutive manner.
    • Click on ‘Start’ button
    • Click on ‘Control Panel’ option
    • Open ‘Windows Update Troubleshooter’
    • Type troubleshooter on search box
    • Click on ‘Troubleshooting’ option
    • Click on ‘Fix problems with Windows Update’ option under ‘System and Security’
Finally, you should install the update and check whether the issue gets solved or not.

I suggest that you boot your computer to Clean boot and check if you are able to start the Windows Update service.
    a. Click Start, type msconfig in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
    b. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Continue.
    c. On the General tab, click Selective Startup.
    d. Under Selective Startup, click to clear the Load Startup Items check box.
    e. Click the Services tab, click to select the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, and then click Disable All.
    f. Click OK.
    g. When you are prompted, click Restart.
After the computer starts, check if the issue is fixed, then follow the steps mentioned in the following KB article to narrow down the exact source:
