Windows Explorer crashes while opening avi files

I am running windows XP SP3. I cannot open avi files because windows explorer crashes, if I even open a folder with an avi file in it then windows explorer crashes. I have tried to run the Mats_run_codec from microsoft but it just says I need to run dot_run_fx (framework 2), but when I run that I get the error message - system error:0x80131107. I have viewed 'Event Viewer' and have found the following: In Application I found the description as "Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.5512, faulting module urlmon.dll, version 8.0.6001.19019, fault address 0x0002df6e. and the other error event is - Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.5512, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.6055, fault address 0x00011053". Can anyone help me out.

To resolve this problem you can try any of these two steps

1.Download and install any suital codec pack
    2.Install vlc media player

If none of these two works then you might be the victim of corrupt file

You have not mentioned which player you are using

1.Download and install vlc media player in your pc
    2.If the problems persist
3.Download and install k-lite mega codec pack
4.If the problem persist try playing some other .avi file
5.If other file plays well then your file is corrupted

    Hi,

As the Windows Explorer is crashing under the pressure of either corrupt file or may be there is some kind of settings problems which is creating havoc in the windows.

As you have mentioned that you tried your hand in downloading and installing microsoft codec and yet the problem persists,

I will suggest you to repair the installed Windows using windows installer cd and that will try to reinstate all damaged files to normal active condition.

Also check the system for virus, and clean it immidietly.

    Thanks.

Open the ‘Run’ dialog box from the start menu (Start->Run or press the Windows and r keys together):

To remove media preview, type and hit enter
    regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll
To readd media preview, type and hit enter
    regsvr32 shmedia.dll

    Dear..

Using a bugged player can only cause these kinda problem.

First of all delete the existing all players

Now download an updated version of a suitable player ( Preferrebly VLC)

Now restart the system and then you will see there is no such problem occurring

If problem persist then formatting the PC is only solution as you have already installed codec which is not working

    ALL THE BEST
