Applications canít create files on Windows XP

When I download an application into my PC running on Windows XP, that application itself creates some files on the system. But for the past few weeks, I keep getting the violation error 0xC0000005 in comctl32.dll when an application tries to create it files. What troubleshooting steps should I take to avoid this error?

Perform a System File Checker (SFC) scan on your PC so that it will replace incorrect versions of system files with correct versions. The first step required is to click the ‘Start’ button and select ‘All Programs’ from the start menu pop up on the screen. Click the ‘Accessories’ option afterwards so that you can find the ‘Command Prompt’ icon. Right click on that icon and make a single click on ‘Run as Administrator’ option. Type the correct password or press the ‘Continue’ button while you are prompted to enter administrator password or provide confirmation. This will bring up the black command prompt window on the screen. Type sfc /scannow into that window and press the ‘Enter’ key.
