Unable to Free up space in Hard disk even after deleting contents

I have a hard disk which has a capacity of 320 GB. I am using windows 7 in my laptop which works on i3 processor with 2 GB RAM.I stored so many thing in my hard disk due to which it shows completely filled so I decided to delete some data from hard disk. I deleted a large amount of data which is approximately 100 GB but still it shows filled space. Why is it behaving like that and is there any solution for this problem?

    My friend ,
Worm may be the cause of your problem, they are the class of computer viruses which replicate themselves and eats up the storage space.Install good antivirus software and scan your drive or install disk utility tools like disk cleaner or tune up which will show you where your storage space has gone category wise.

Re: Unable to Free up space in Hard disk even after deleting contents

By seeing the question that you mentioned i can say that your system has virus because some virus will make the original files hidden and they will place the duplicate file i.e shortcuts in place of them. so when you delete you are deleting the shortcuts not the original files so that is the problem your drive is not showing the free space.

So for this problem first you have to change the hidden attribute for the files that were hidden by the virus.
Follow these steps to unhide the files.

    - Go to run
    - type cmd and press enter
    - in the commad prompt navigate the pointer to the directory or folder where you have the files to unhide
    - for example you have the files in d drive.so type d: and press enter
    - the command prompt will change to d drive
    - type dir and press enter
    - you can see all the folders list
    - now for changing the attributes type attrib [option ] directory name
    - for example the directory name is movie then follow the command

    d:> attrib -h movie

    - the option to remove the hidden attribute is "-h"
    - after removing the hidden attribute open the drive in my computer and see .now you can see the folder again.
    - follow the same procedure for all folders and delete all of them
    - now your drive will show the free space.

to get rid of this kind of virus better choose an best antivirus and install it. minimize using the pendrives.

    Hello,

Sometimes what happens is that your data is just physically gone which we assume to be deleted.
But it remains in the virtual memory and hence it keeps using the storage space.
If you want to clean up your computer you can use tools like "CC cleaner"
It helps you remove data from the computer without much efforts.

    Hi

There are many times that the Computer is filled up due to excess date and then it starts behaving and responding slowly. So it eats up the speed of the computer by blocking its RAM.
Now as you said earlier you had so many files on your laptop. Now you have deleted all of them but still your laptop is not improving.

First thing you check is if you have deleted them from the Recycle bin as well. This is as recycle bin is also a memory of your computer and so it is also still there in your computer.
If done, then restart your laptop and observe the performance.

Third time if it doesn't respond, then I would suggest you to format your laptop.

    Hope this helps

    All the best

The items you deleted in your computer disc is just index deleted they will be present in the Recycle bin.
So you deleted on ly the indexes not the actual folders.
In order to have more disc space go to recycle bin and delete the files there.(Right click on the recycle bin and select Empty the recycle bin)
Here after if you wish to delete a file permanently then press Shift button and press delete button.
This will delete the file permanently. and makes more space for other files.

    Hi,
it seems that you are under attack of some fatal virus, so better install some good antivirus such as NORTON,AVG,QUICK HEAL,AVIRA etc.
and have a full system scan, and remove any malware which you have installed recently.
    :-)
    this will certainly help.

Your problem is little bit strange as you are not able to free up space in Hard disk even after deleting contents . but these these type of problems can of following reasons as discussed below:

Disk space may be occupied due to presence of some error on disk.
Disk space is less due to presence of virus on your system.
Also space is less due to presence of Hidden files on disk.
Indexing option enabled may also have taken space.
Bad sector problem can also be issue.

    How to Tackle this Problem

Check disk for Bad sectors .
Check Pc for any virus problem.
Check disk for hidden files in folders.
    Disable indexing inside Drives .

    hi dear,

the possible reasons for this are:-

:- have some error on your hard disk.
:- virus will fill up free space many virus d o that eat up free space.
:- hard disk may have bad sector.

Criteria for the get rid off problem:-

:- use a strong anti virus and scan your hard disk.
:- check your hard disk for bad sector.
:- use '''disk doctor''' software to check error in hard disk.

    Thanks,

Re: Unable to Free up space in Hard disk even after deleting contents

    Hello Friend,

As you have mentioned in your question that you've deleted all the files but still you are not getting free space in your disk. Here, I would like to tell you that no doubt, you've deleted the complete data but there must exists some hidden data.

Such type of problem you are facing is just because of the virus in your computer. Virus can make the files invisible to the user or it may create too many copies and shortcuts of the files. So, whenever you free your disk by deleting the contents, you just skip the hidden data bacuase its just not visible to your eyes.

So, first you have to unhide that and remove the virus with the help of some good antivirus. In order to unhide the files and folders, follow the steps that are listed below:

    1. Click on "Start" and go to "Run".

    2. Type "cmd" and press "Enter".

    3. Now, select the drive in which you want to find out the files. For this you have to type a command in the command prompt. e.g. d: and then press enter.

    4. Your drive has changed.

    5. Write "Dir" then Enter. This will show the entire files. Delete these.

    6. Now, use the attrib command.

    d:>attrib -h

This will unhide all the files and folder. Now, you can intract with that.

Wish you all the very best.

    Hey friend..

    Its quite easy.
If you still cant find the space, then copy all your left data from the present hard disk and paste it in another hard disk partition.
Then format the previous hard disk partition and check your free space.
Your hard disk will now show you free space.
Now copy all your data in the your free disk partition and enjoy...

    Thanks

    dear friend,

Seems like there are lot of hidden files in your hard disk partition which you want to make free.

Open up any window & click on the Organize option.

Now select the Folder & search option & go to the View tab.

Now check Don't show hidden files & folders option & click on OK.

Go to the drive & delete the hidden files by pressing Shift + Delete.

    Open the command prompt.

Go to the Run window & type cmd in the edit field & hit enter.

Open the drive path & type Dir followed by hit enter.

You can see all the files present in that drive.

Check those files & delete manually.

If nothing works then simply format the drive by right clicking on it.

But do not go for quick format

You may also check disk cleanup option to make empty your partition.

Right click on the particular drive & click on properties.

In the General tab, click on Disk cleanup option & click on OK.

Now follow the steps as prompted & after termination of this process, make a reboot.

But before doing that , move all the important documents to any destination drive.

hi my dear friend............to fix this issue follow the given steps ....which may be helps you

first check the Recycle bin is Empty or not

because Each drive space will be shared by the recycle bin .........to confirm this right click on the Recycle bin and choose the properties and see the Each drive allocation for the Recycle bin

when you delete the Data from the drives ......that data moves to the Recycle bin

so it is nothing but the temperary deletion only.......after making the recycle bin empty .....then the drive space is recovered

and perform the diskdefragement operation also .....which is also useful......in case of recovering the hard disk space

    ...........THANK YOU

    Hello friend,

I have the solution for your problem just do as i say............

    1.Firstly install that software again.

2.Now you go to the 'My Computer'.

3.Then you go to the 'Add or remove Program'.

4.From there you delete the software.

    Or

Perform the 'Disk Management' in your computer.
So that it compress your files and increase your free space.

So that you can get back your free space. So from now you don't delete any software directly you delete by doing as i said.

If you want to get more free space then do as i say below.

Firstly delete all the 'Temp' files.
To delete those you open the 'Run' and there you type '%temp%.

    Have a nice day.......

    Dear friend,

Your PC might be affected with a Virus due to which your System is showing you wrong Information about your PC.

Firstly, you should Restart your PC and again check the Free Space.

Even then, if you see the same situation, then you install an Antivirus to remove Virus.

However, you can also use CCleaner available on File Hippo Website, you may get help from this software.

    Dear Friend!!
Its very simple to manage disk space in your drives.
First of all, run the disk cleanup.
And after that, defragment your disk.
Defragmenting the disk helps in allocating the free space which can not be used by computer.
It compresses the tracks abd sectors of the dick which are not being used.

Re: Unable to Free up space in Hard disk even after deleting contents

    Dear friend,

You should empty the recycle bin. The recycle bin program has a recycle bin folder on every partition on your hard disk. When you delete something, the deleted file goes to the recycle bin folder in the same partition having the file. When you delete a large file it goes into the recycle bin folder. These files are deleted from these folders, when you empty the recycle bin at desktop. Until or unless you do not empty the recycle bin the space is not freed up. So you should empty the recycle bin to get the free space.
It may be possible that your PC is infected with viruses which is preventing the PC to free-up the space on your hard disk. You should have complete scan of the hard disk with updated anti-virus software.

    Thanks!
