What is the real cause of BSOD crashes in windows OS?

I have used windows XP and windows 7 and in both of these operating system, I have suffered the problem of BSOD crashes. Then it asks you to run chkdsk C:/f/r etc which works some times and sometimes not. Most of the time, it becoome difficult to find the cause of this error. DO you have any idea about its cause so that we can avoid its occurrence?

Blue Screen of Death (BSoD), known as a Stop Error.
-This is error screen generated by windows of operating systems upon encountering a critical error, of a non-recoverable nature, that causes the system to crash.
-BlueScreenView scans all your minidump files created during 'blue screen of death' crashes, and displays the information about all crashes in one table.
-Each crash, BlueScreenView displays the minidump filename, the date/time of the crash, the basic crash information displayed in the blue screen , and the details of the driver or module that possibly caused the crash
-Blue screens are typically caused by software errors in device drivers.

You cant change any driver programs you can only update these regularly to avoid such problem.
